EMILY AND THE AL-QAEDA

Have you ever been terrified? Truly terrified that someone was trying to kill you? I have, and believe me when I say it isn’t an experience I’d care to repeat.

The mall was closing as the three of us walked to the car and opened the doors. The parking lot was full and more people were pouring out of the building. My first clue was my daughter’s strangled voice, “Oh, please don’t do that.”

I looked up to see three young boys, one with a gun pressed into my daughter’s neck. “Gimme your purses,” he demanded, wild-eyed and dancing from one foot to the other. “Now!”

Barbi and I quickly handed over our purses. Judi did not. She hunkered down in the back seat and locked the door, clutching her purse to her chest.

“I’ll kill her!” the one with the gun threatened, while another of the boys came around to my side of the car. The third boy grabbed Barbi’s arm and tried to pull her out of the car. I grabbed her other arm and held on. They were not going to take her hostage!

A voice I didn’t recognize (mine), screamed, “Leave her alone! Go away! Get out of here!”

Barbi pleaded, “Judi, give them your purse. Please!” Judi slid down lower in her seat and tried to stuff her purse behind her.

The gun was tossed over top of the car and before I knew what was happening, the boy hit me over the head with the barrel of the pistol. My vision went blurry, my head swam and blood streamed down my face, blinding me. I keeled over with my head in Barbi’s lap, barely conscious.

For the first and only time in my life I heard my daughter swear. “God-damn it, Judy! Give him your purse!” Judi did.

The boys ran, zig-zagging between cars, leaping over crouched shoppers, and within seconds were lost to view in bushes lining the parking lot.     (click here to purchase Eye See You)

The police came, and an ambulance. My husband appeared—Judi had called her parents—and the mall officials hovered anxiously. Finally we were allowed to go home.

The boys were never caught, although Barbi was able to identify two of them from a thick book of mug shots; I had nightmares for months, and it was a long time before I could see three young boys sauntering along the street without my heart leaping into my throat.

I think you have to live through that kind of horror before you can adequately describe it to anyone else. In my new novella, EYE SEE YOU, a book of international intrigue, Emily becomes intimate with that kind of fear. She travels frequently with her boss, and is standing in line at an airline ticket counter in Berne, Switzerland, innocently conversing with a sweet, elderly man, when he suddenly leaves the line and disappears into the crowd. Back home in the States, the front page of the Washington Post carries his photo and the story of him being found in a men’s room with his throat slit.

What she doesn’t know is that he was a double agent and has slipped a flash drive of high importance into her carry-on luggage months ago in Heathrow, London. He then went into hiding and complete isolation. Neither the Al-Qaeda nor the U.S. know where the flash drive is--even Emily doesn’t know she has it Nor does she know she is under surveillance by both sides when they figure it out. She only knows she is being stalked, beaten, her house ransacked, her purse stolen, and someone has tried to murder her. She doesn’t know who to trust. She is frantic.

Thanks to you, my friends, my sales at Amazon and B&N are doing quite well. You apparently enjoyed LIKE A RIVER, MY LOVE—and I think you’ll enjoy EYE SEE YOU, as well. International intrigue is a new genre for me, but I surely had a good time writing Emily’s story. I’m putting it up on both Kindle and Nook at a greatly reduced price ($1.99) in the hopes you’ll give it a try.        (Click Here to buy Eye See You)

From the beginning my passion has been to write about relationships -- the way our lives rub against each other and, in the process, change us in ways both great and small. Relationships change our lives. And so, I am a romance novelist.
